Butterfly Gardening BlogWelcome! This blog is mostly about butterfly gardening, but other types of plants and gardens, as well as other wildlife is blogged about too. May 31, 2008 My monarda has been blooming - starting to fade now but I took these pictures a few days ago. It is a nectar source, not a host plant. I wanted it in part to have something that would bloom early in the season. I don’t really see many butterflies in my garden this time of year yet, but its good to have something for them if they do stop by.

A monarda? I’m not sure if we even have that in Australia… I’ve never seen one before.
I love the soft mauve colour with the touch or darker purple on the petals.
That is an amazing display when grouped together. Can they be cut and used for display inside as an arrangement?

Its native to north america, I bet you don’t have it there. I think they could be cut, the stems are kind of long. There’s a commercial variety that has red flowers, they are really pretty, but I haven’t had good luck with keeping those alive for very long.
